Grand Knight’s Message
Brothers,
The turkey day has come and gone and the Christmas Season is officially here. The hustle bustle of the shoppers at the malls, the ringing of the cash registers, the Christmas decorations that have been up since Halloween are still there and the never ending Christmas music wafting through the air making it easier to withstand the madness.
With all the thought that goes into the gift buying and giving, how much thought goes into your love of Christ? If it weren’t for Him we wouldn’t have this time of year to celebrate. With the start of Advent, how many of us fail to recognize the true meaning of our church and religion? All of us have seen how crowded the Masses are at this time of year, especially Christmas. Those that bring their children because of religious education but don’t come to Mass will always be there for Christmas and Easter and feel they have done there “duty”. It is not a duty but an obligation to give thanks to God for what we have and praise Him.
This is the season of gift giving and Carol singing and homecoming for families far and wide to gather once again in the comfort of our homes. It’s a good time for cheer, but let us remember and never forget who made this possible. Christ made the season by His birth but our servicemen and women make it possible by their vigilance and putting themselves in harms way, and many pay the ultimate sacrifice that allows us to enjoy this time that God has made.
Please as you sit around the table or the tree, say a prayer not only for those keeping our country safe but their families as well that they may be safely together soon, and that God keeps them safe.
Viva Jesus, George Kuhlow

Chaplain’s Message:
The Need of Memory
The experiences of the past are recorded in memory, which is made up of thousands of yesterdays. The older one gets the more store we set by it. The young look forward but the old look back. There is a kind of impatience about the present, due principally to the innate yearning in the human soul for immortality, and for the joys that do not fade and treasures that do not corrupt. Many a person recalls his school days and wishes that he had studied harder or else stayed longer in school.
Memory is the autobiography of our lives, and though we cover the pages with barbiturates, the indelible record remains. Since it survives with unhappy memories, the solution is not to drug it, but to face it. Since memory contains the material on which our conscience passes judgment, it follows that the best way to rid ourselves of bad memory is to cleanse our consciences. Then the record which was once shame begins to be our glory. Since it is a fact that the more displeasing certain things are, the more apt they are to be recalled, may this not be evidence of the mercy of God, Who shows us the wound, that we can call Him in as a Physician of our souls.
Way to Inner Peace

On December 4th, we held our Annual Christmas Party at the Double Tree Hotel. A big thank you to Bob and Angela Maher for the job of putting it all together once again. The 4th Degree had a hospitality room before and after the affair for those staying the night.
The music put all of us in the seasonal spirit and the food as always was more then enough. It was a great evening for fun and camaraderie but was all to short. As usual the singing of the Twelve Days of Christmas was once again sung with gusto. We were joined in the festivities by our State Deputy Ron Gorman and his wife Pat as well as our Vice Supreme Commander Richie Head and his wife Judy. The 50/50 was won by Janice Hinkledire.
Sadly this will be our last year at the Double Tree due to lack of response. For the years that we held our party there again we thank Angela and Bob Maher for their efforts in making it a success in the past.

Fraternal Hours  George Kuhlow 589-6158
This is a repeat of last month’s message on your hours and the importance of getting them for the state meeting in January. If I get them sooner all the better as it takes time to do it all for the council.
Your fraternal hours are hours that are volunteered without pay in anything you do. Your church hours from ushering, Eucharistic ministers, Parish council and everything else that has to do with the church are volunteered.
Community, again all the hours doing service such as fire & rescue, water rescue, moving goods, transporting food and all in between.
Blood donors, how often you gave or worked the blood drives.
In short everything you do including bereavement and working with the sick and elderly all counts.
The only thing that does not count are the meetings and degrees.
Please start making out your numbers so when I give you the form next month all you have to do is transfer your hours to the proper place and let me have them before the end of December. Brothers this is time consuming and no easy task but you can help me out by taking a few minutes of your time to do yours so I can do everyone’s together. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call or email me.

An Honor
On March 23rd, there will be a Third Degree in Charlottesville at the Catholic High School and our council has been asked to be the host council. Bob Maher has worked long and hard for this and it’s becoming a reality. Once a degree is held here we may see more of them. As we are to be the host council there will be a commitment to make it a success. We will be asked to take on a duty in unchartered waters for us but we have handled new assignments before and always came out for the better. Other councils have held these every year and none has ever been in our area. This will be our time to shine and shine we will. This is not a one man job and we will be looking for volunteers to help out and this will be a feather in our cap. More information will follow as the time grows closer.

In Closing
As the end of the year draws to a close we reflect back on the year past. Have you stayed the course for your resolutions? Have you met the goals that you set for the past year? Have you lived the lessons of the Knights of Columbus? Have you helped someone in need in the face of adversity?
We all have lost members of families and friends and life still goes on. It’s what you do with it that counts. If you have done none of the above, consider doing it with the New Year.
We all have complaints but are they so big and disturbing that it upsets us so much we loose focus of what’s really important in our lives? Every decision made by us has two sides. One side is the right one and the other side you regret the outcome. How many decisions did you make this past year that the outcome may have changed if not your life but the lives of others? What path in life have you followed to better your well being as well as your family? Have you become more involved in your church, family and community? Have you stood up against injustice to others? Have you taken a closer interest and become more involved in the fight against abortion?
The Gospel of Matthew a few weeks ago was the parable told of the talents given to the workers by the landowner to see what they would do with them to increase their worth. The workers in this case were us and the landowner was God. The question is, what have you done with the talents that God gave you? Have you doubled them in helping others or did you bury them and keep the status quo?
Think about it, as a member of the greatest organization in the world all these answers should be easy if you follow the works and ideals of Father McGivney.
On behalf of myself and family, I would like to wish you a Blessed and safe Christmas Season and a healthy New Year.
God Bless America

Adult Truths
Map Quest needs to start their directions at number 5. I’m sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.
Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how people died.
I can’t remember the last time I was at least kind of tired.
Bad decisions make the best stories.
I keep some people’s numbers in my phone just so I know who to ignore.
I disagree with Kay Jewelers, I would bet that on any given Friday or Saturday, the first kiss begins with a bottle of beer.

Old is When….
Your wife asks “Do you want to go upstairs and make love?” You answer “Pick one, I can’t do both.”

Your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes, and you’re barefoot.

You see a sexy babe and your pacemaker opens the garage door.

You don’t care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don’t have to go with her.

When your doctor cautions you to slow down instead of the police.

“Getting a little action” Means you can do without fiber for the day.

“Getting lucky” means you found your car in the parking lot.

An “all nighter” means not getting up to use the bathroom.

You’re not really sure if these are jokes or not.

Time to keep your mouth shut..
A husband and wife were shopping for a vacation wardrobe and the wife saw a bikini and a two piece suit. It was ten years since she bought a swimsuit and she asked her husband, “Honey, what should I get, the bikini or one piece?” He answered, “Better get the bikini I don’t think you’ll get it all in one piece.” He’ll be in intensive care for another week.

A very cold winter
An Indian tribe in a remote area of North Dakota wanted to know what kind of winter it would be so they asked their medicine man. He was not schooled in the old way so just looking at the sky would not tell him what to expect. He told them he would pray on this and ask the Gods for a sign. To be on the safe side he told his tribe to stock up with wood because it would be a cold winter.
He then went into town and called the National Weather Service. He asked if it was going to be a cold winter. “It’s going to be a very cold winter.” He went to his people and told them stock up on as much wood as you can. It’s going to be a very cold winter.”
A few days later he called the service again and asked, ”Are you sure it’s going to be a cold winter?” “It looks to be a terribly cold winter.”
He went back to his people again and said, “Collect every scrap of wood you can find, it will be a terribly cold winter.”
Again he called the service and asked the same question. The service told him, “It looks to be the worst winter in history.” “How can you be so sure?” the medicine man asked.
“Because the Indians are collecting a boatload of wood.”

A shampoo warning
I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. The shampoo I use in the shower runs down my body (duh) and printed clearly on the label it says to use it for a “fuller volume and extra body” No wonder I’ve been gaining weight.
So I got rid of the shampoo and I’m using Dawn dish soap instead. The label reads “Dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to remove.” Problem solved.
If I don’t answer the phone I’m in the shower.

The Zen of Sarcasm
Do not walk behind me because I may not lead. Do not walk in front of me because I may not follow, Do not walk beside me either. In other words leave me alone.

It’s always darkest before dawn. So if you want to steal your neighbor’s newspaper, that’s the time to do it.

Don’t be irreplaceable. If you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted.

Just remember you are unique, just like everyone else.

Never test the depth of the water with both feet at the same time.

If you think nobody cares if you’re alive just miss a few car payments.

Before you criticize someone you should walk a mile in their shoes, that way when you do criticize them you’ll be a mile away and have their shoes.

If at first you don’t succeed, then sky diving is not for you.

Give a man a fish and he’ll eat all day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll sit in the boat and drink beer all day.

If you lend someone $20 and don’t see him again it’s probably a wise investment.

If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.

Some days you’re the bug and some days you’re the windshield.

Everyone seems normal until you get to meet them.

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in two and put it back in your pocket.

A closed mouth gathers no foot.

There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither of them work.

Generally speaking you aren’t learning anything if your lips are moving.

Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.

Never miss a good chance to shut up.

Never under any circumstances take a laxative the same time you take a sleeping pill.

Ponderisms
Can you cry underwater?
How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?
Why do you “put your two cents in” but get a “penny for your thoughts” where’s the extra penny go?
Once you’re in Heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?
Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
What disease did the cured ham actually have?
How is it we put a man on the moon before someone thought to put wheels on luggage?
